On safari... in Mexico

One of the greatest surprises I've had in Mexico, and there have been many, was seeing the amazing Africam Safari. There were so many cool animals from all over the world just roaming around this park designed to represent a safari experience. I met a woman from the Czech Republic, Katie, in the hostel in Puebla and we decided to go and check it out. Africam really isn't far from Puebla, but we decided to have some fun and hitch-hike there. From the edge of Puebla we caught two rides with the last taking us strait into the park.

After having something to eat we took a look at the smaller animals first walking around the zoo. The first animals were saw were the hilarious monkeys hanging out on a couple of artificial islands in a small lake. It was a fun way to start our safari in Mexico.

From Monkey Island we went to check out the rest of the park. Between checking out all of the smaller animals I thought it would be fun to take a trip down the huge concrete slide. We were the first ones to ride that day and the first trip down was fun but not that fast. On the trip they greased down the slide took and we both went flying.

One of the coolest exhibits in the walking part of the zoo was the kangaroo area. They were just hanging out in front of us and we could practically walk right up to them. From the kangaroos we moved on the the vampire bat exhibit which was also very cool. We walked under a waterfall to a pitch black cave that was split down the middle by a pane of glass on the other side the vampire bats lit by a red light and feasting hanging fruit. The next part of the exhibit were the lush butterfly gardens.

After a couple hours walking around the zoo part of the park we made it to safari adventure where we would see the larger animals of the park. We took our safari in an old bus that drove right along side a huge variety of animals from all over the world. For an hour and half we had a guided tour of the park taking pictures of the animals through the windows or hanging out the open door of the bus.

Of course not all of the animals lived so well together, namely the lions and tigers. For this gated off section of the park we had to close all of the bus windows and the door. That was the only safety precaution! The animals were beautiful and so close!

Back in the open section of the park we saw some more animals running around then took a break to get out and see the gorillas, hippos, and hyenas. From there we got back on the bus to finish off our safari.

To get back to Puebla we decided to continue the adventure and hitch-hike back. This time we were riding in the back of the truck enjoying the trip back to town. It was another great day in Mexico.
