MFA Eronga

MFA Eronga is an amazing furniture cooperative that Steve and Maureen run in their small town of Erongaricuaro, Mexico. The cooperative specializes in very unique, high quality, handcrafted, and hand painted furniture. Over 50 very talented people are employed at cooperative and their beautiful products are shipped all over the world. If you are interested in learning more about their products you can find their website and retail location in Tucson at the bottom of this entry.

The showroom at the workshop was a limited but there were plenty of pieces that were just being finished with lots of great examples of their hand painting.

Of course the process leading up to the final product was the most interesting part of the workshop and Steve and Maureen were happy to give me a tour. When I first arrived at the cooperative I found a maze of spaces with carpenters and painters working away. After roaming around a little bit I found Steve and Maureen putting the final touches on a couple of their pieces that were about to be shipped.

We started in the cabinetry workshop where they were building and putting the furniture together, carving it, then preparing it to be painted and sealed.

From the cabinetry department the pieces were sent to be hand painted. The first step was to draw the design onto the furniture, then the pieces were sent to the very talented painters. From there they were sealed, polished, and made ready to be shipped.
