Sailing south in Belize

There is a sailing trip that leaves from Caye Caulker, which is in the north of Belize, and finishes at Placencia in the south of Belize. This was perfect for me since I was heading south anyway and the trip sounded like a great time. From Caye Caulker 13 of us including the two crewmen of the boat made our way south sailing, fishing, snorkeling, camping, and drinking along the way; it was a great time and unique experience.

2 Belizians, 4 Brits, 2 Swiss Germans, 2 Swiss Italians, 1 Australian, and 1 French Canadian and me were together for three days on a small boat and a couple of tiny islands. Our trip started out cloudy but soon the sun came out and we were all having a great time. For the most part we were sailing but when the wind gave out we used a small outboard motor to cruise along the barrier reef down the coast of Belize. On the first day we anchored along the reef at a couple of good snorkeling spots and stopped at small island with a lighthouse called English Caye.

Our campsite for the night was a tiny island with all of 8 palm trees, called Rondevous Caye. One of our group leisurely walked around the whole of the island in two minutes. It was a picturesque place to be for the night and we had a great time with plenty of rum punch and a roaring campfire.

The next day we did more snorkeling and fished for our dinner. We were even had a couple of spear guns to fish with while we were snorkeling. Along the way we caught 3 baracuda and had a great dinner at our next island campsite, Tabaco Caye. This island was a little larger having six families that lived there permanently. It was a laid back place with nothing much to do other than snorkel, dive, fish, and lay in one of the many hammocks on the island. We had a great fish dinner and another party on the dock that night.

The next day we passed some more small islands did a little snorkeling making it to Placencia that afternoon. From there most of us were heading south to Guatemala or Honduras so we walked through Placencia then took a water taxi across the lagoon to the mainland and piled into a bus heading further south to Punta Gorda, Belize. From there we would be taking another water taxi over to Guatemala the next day.
