From Iguazul Falls to Uruguay

From Iguazul falls Katie and I wanted to make it to the good beaches and carnival festivities of Uruguay. Katie was set on renting a car but it was a complicated mess to rent a car from the falls, drive it to Uruguay, then drop it off in Buenos Aires. We decided to take a 15 hour night bus south then rent a car in Santa Fe, Argentina and drive east to Uruguay, after she left from Buenos Aires I would later drive the car back to Santa Fe. The long bus ride was a challenge but we had some fun in Santa Fe and met some nice people the night we got into town. We went to this very posh night club that had an adjacent lake with a 3am water sking exhibition. Things start incredibly late in Argentina. Most people start eating dinner after 10 at night then there is a bit of drinking before arriving at the clubs around 3 in the morning. It was a fun night but long and a little odd. The women in Santa Fe were absolutely gorgeous, but they all tended to dance in a group. The guys hung around each other as well. Everyone was sort of half dancing with their friends of the same sex, looking good and being coy for the others. It was odd and somewhat reminiscent of a high school, but it was entertaining in its own way. The next day we were set to rent a car, but it turned out it would take three days to get the paper work to drive to Uruguay. Katie was not happy, but we adjusted and came up with a new plan.

The new plan was to bus it 6 more hours to Buenos Aires then take the ferry across the Rio Plata to Uruguay. We couldn't get a bus early enough to make the connection to Uruguay that day so that was another disappointment. Katie was pretty frustrated considering she had been on a very long flight to South America, then another 20 plus hours on a bus and she had yet to see the beach. On top of that the rain started to come down in Buenos Aires. Very early the next morning we slogged through the lashing rain and took the earliest boat over to Uruguay. Our so far miserable travel experience reached it's peak on the boat ride the next day. I had stayed up the whole previous night to take advantage of the computer at our hotel and decided to take a nap on the floor of the ship the next morning at the very front of the boat. The beginning of the trip was choppy but I didn't let it phase me too much. I was bouncing some but it was still good to stretch out. As our boat took on more speed and made it to open water I was starting to get tossed in the air. Everyone was either cheering or screaming to the wildest boat ride I have ever been on. I finally decided to take a seat after we crested over a huge wave which launched whole front of the boat into the air for what seemed like seconds. I was tossed up about three feet, above the seated level of my sister in front of me, and then crashed to the floor with enough force to shatter a pen in my pocket. From there I took my seat and hung on for dear life. By the time we finished our hour long hell ride more than 50 people including myself were puking in unison. Katie some how held on until she made it to the other side but she was shaking the whole time, eyes completely closed, and seemingly praying for the boat to get there already . It was the most miserable boat ride either one of us had been on. To follow up our nauseating boat ride we had another two hour bus ride from the picturesque city of Colonia to make it to the beaches of Montevideo. Katie wanted to get to a beach come hell or high water and both seemed to be arriving about the same time.
