Medellin, Colombia

Josh and I arrived early in the morning from hellish night bus from Turbo at the very north of Colombia. From the bus station we rode on the smoothest, cleanest subway I have ever seen and made it to our hostel.

Medellin was an incredible city. So clean, friendly, beautiful, advanced, and orderly, yet still with the fun loving latin feel. At one point Medellin was considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world due to it's drug wars, but it is well beyond that now and really a place to see. Colombia has done so much in the last five years to become a safe place. It was interesting talking to the people, they were so aware of Colombia's dangerous reputation, and so eager to for travelers to enjoy their country again.

I ended up spending New Years Eve in Medellin. In Colombia New Years Eve tends to be more of a family affair. Only a couple of bars were open, but it ended up being a great night. After the bars closed our big group of travelers and Colombians ended up hanging out at one of the hostels and dancing until the sun came up.

While New Years tends to be a family ordeal the rest of the beginning of January seemed to be one big party. All around the country there were festivals and carnivals going on. In Medellin one of the big attractions were the holiday lights along the river. It was such a cool and festive place to be.

Medellin had a great feel to it. Fun and lively with a lot of really great attractions. I spent 5 days there roaming around the city on the fantastic metro system and cable cars hanging above the city. The streets were also pretty lively with plenty of outdoor markets, parks, and street performers.

Near the university were a lot of great museums and public attractions. There was an aquarium science park and a gorgeous botanical garden. I spent a lot of time just wondering around and taking a lot of great photos of design ideas. Overall Medellin was a pretty incredible city, and definitely safe to visit.

bernie. your trips are sounding super cool man. kudos to you man for being so completly comfortable as a man with the world as his home. no less than that, in countries that I, knowing nothing about them more than what is portrayed on tv and movies, would be freaked out about moving around in. i gathered from your bullfight story you werent found it a bit cruel. though i havent seen a bullfight myself, i doubt that this death of the bull is any more horrible than life and death in a feedlot; at least the bull has the illusion of a fight against a villain. just thought i might add that thought to it. but really cool trip man. i just started reading this blog, but im going to start going thru the rest. looks like you are getting great exposure to a lot of really cool plazas, gardens, and the like.

When I saw that you were in Medellin, I got nervous! After your comments, I felt better. Did you see any bullet holes in the walls of this beautiful city?

Continued good fortune!
