Celestun Nature Reserve

From Palenque my Kiwi friend Suzie and I traveled to Merida to take part in the upcoming Independence Day celebration. Merida is the capital of the Yucatan and a fairly traditional city as well, so we figured that would be the best place to pass the 15th of September. We arrived the day before, and met a great group of guys from Holland who were driving a van around Mexico. They invited Suzie and I to travel with them to the Celestun Nature Reserve the next day before the independence festivities got rolling that night.

We had a fun day together driving out to the coast, eating on the beach, swimming in the ocean, and taking a two hour boat tour of the nature reserve. At the beach we met a German couple who also joined us on the boat tour and for the Independence celebration later that night.

From the beach we took a boat tour that took us around the reserve showing us pelicans, flamingos, mangroves, fresh water springs, and a dead forest. On one of our stops we were able to get out and take a dip at a fresh water spring in the mangroves. It was fun trip.
