From Santiago I walked out of town and found a truck that was just about to leave for Guantanamo. I jumped on and the amazing nice fare collector offered me the front seat of the cab for a little higher price. It was worth it to have a seat and see the beautiful landscape in front of us. In Guantanamo I jumped on a motorcycle at the station and we crossed the city so that he could drop me off at the road heading further east. I was heading to the very eastern tip of Cuba, to the end of the road at Baracoa. Once an isolated place on the opposite side of the Farola Mountains Baracoa was said to be the unique “Shangri-La” of Cuba. As soon as the motorcycle dropped me off I got a couple personal pizzas to go and as I walked up the bus line only for Cubans pulled up looking for passengers for Baracoa, which was still another 4 hours away over the steep Farola mountain range. I would have been a beautiful ride hitch-hiking in an open truck, but it was getting late and this would be a sweet way to go. They weren’t going to let me on, but of course money talks. The one bus manager and two drivers got to split 6 bucks between them and I had a cushy ride to the end of the road.
You would think they would look a little happier with the extra cash in their pockets

Baracoa was an interesting town and I met some nice people, but I didn’t particularly care for it. Compared to Santiago the people were more closed off and cold. There weren’t as many cool old cars here, but the political propaganda seemed to be everywhere.
