Guitar festival in Paracho

On another day trip I went to visit Paracho which is a Purepech town located 40 minutes north of Uruapan. Paracho's claim to fame are it's high quality handmade guitars, and I had the luck of visiting the town during its International Guitar Festival.

For kicks I hitch-hiked up to Paracho from Uruapan and decided to get off just before the town to see an outlying community and a gorgeous field of yellow flowers. It was an interesting diversion with a number of interesting sights.

My first sight coming into Paracho was to see two donkeys racing each other down the other side of the street.

Once in Paracho it is easy to see how guitars are such an part of the town's identity. Aside from the various sculptures there were around twenty shops on the main drag specializing in handmade guitars. As soon as I made it into town their was a shop on the corner happy to show off their craftsmanship. Many other stores and workshops would do the same.

The festival itself was a lively event with events on stage, people selling their goods and kids running around. There wasn't as much going on during the day as there was at night but it was a good time especially when it wasn't raining.

One of the coolest events they had during the day were the launching of colorful cray paper balloons above the city. Using simple cray paper and glue around a dozen elaborate and colorful balloons were made that held a fire inside of them that would produce enough smoke to lift them for 10-15 minutes above the city. People would chase after the balloons after they were launched and bring them back if there was anything left. Some didn't quite make it off the ground and others actually caught on fire in the air, disintegrating into pieces.

Later in the afternoon and early evening things started to pick up with the rest of the festival and there were plenty of rides and games to go along with the free guitar concert under the big tent.
