Belem, Brazil

From Fortaleza I got on a direct bus to Belem, Brazil. It was supposed to take 24 hours to get there but there were delays along the way and it ended up taking almost 30 hours – ah, the joys of travel!

Belem was one of my favorite cities in Brazil. It is located in the far north of Brazil at the mouth of the Amazon River not too far from the equator. In Belem I stayed with another great guy from Couch Surfing Project, Igor. I made it to the city on a Friday night just in time to go out with Igor and his friends. Igor was a fun and laid back guy, and both he and his family were terrific hosts.

In Belem the first thing I took care of was securing my boat ticket going further north across the Amazon delta to the city of Macapa. Here is just one thing I love about Brazil. After I was showed the standard prices for the boats and bought my ticket from the salesman at a discounted price I was invited to drink a few glasses of beer with him and his buddies.

The Herbalife scam is alive and well in Brazil!

Another thing that I love about Brazil are all of the festivals! The party atmosphere continued in Belem as there was a huge concert and festival in the central park.

One of the great sights in Belem was the Ver-o-Peso market. Lot of fish, fruit, veggies, meats, spices, perfumes, and even natural Viagra!

From the market I walked around more of the city checking out the old fort, waterfront, and long bank lines.

One of the cool sights of Belem that I wish I saw more of was the Rodrigues Alves Park.
